Student Essentials – Stationery Wishlist!

Hello everyone – I’m back after my summer break!! I hope you’ve all had a great summer holiday. It’s now over halfway through August, which means in just a few short weeks, lots of you will be embarking on your first year of university! And for others, it will be back to work after a summer break, getting back into the routine of lectures and tutorials.

One of my favourite things to do before term started back, was go shopping for cute new stationery – I could happily spend an entire afternoon in Paperchase alone! How To Deal With Feeling Overwhelmed At Uni

While uni is brilliant fun, and a time to make new friends, go on fun nights out and (hopefully) learn a thing or two, it’s no secret that studying at university is a lot of work. Whatever course you’re on, and whatever stage you’re at, sometimes things can just get a little bit overwhelming, and the stress of course work and exams, sometimes combined with things like juggling a part time job with your studies, or feeling homesick, can all become a bit too much.  So, if you’re feeling a bit anxious and overwhelmed, it’s important to find a way to destress! Here are a few things I found useful over my time at uni, to take my mind off things during the most hectic times of year!

Go for a walk:

Never underestimate the power of going for a short walk. If you’re feeling worked up and stressed, putting the books to one side, picking up your iPod (or whatever you listen to music on!), and going for a walk around the block can really help to calm you down. Exercise releases endorphins, hormones which can have a calming effect on the body and mind. These hormones are shown to improve self-esteem and combat stress, so taking time out for a twenty minute walk not only is good for your physical health, but can have a great effect on how you feel mentally too!

Listen to music:

Listening to your favourite music can have an absolutely incredible impact on how you are feeling. For me, it’s one of the things that can have the biggest effect if I’m feeling anxious – listening to mood lifting songs (for me, it’s usually a bit of cheesy pop music, but go with whatever works for you!) can make me feel so much better. Concentrating on positive lyrics, or upbeat melodies can distract you from the anxious feelings you’re having, which leaves you feeling more relaxed when you eventually get back to work.

Try meditation:

If you had told me a couple of years ago I would find meditation so beneficial, I would probably have laughed at you. I had a complete misconception of what basic meditation involves, and I’m so glad I bit the bullet one particularly anxious day and downloaded the HeadSpace app. There are lots of meditation apps out there, so go and have a look for the one that sounds like it will work best for you (try a couple if they’re free downloads!), and give it a try! HeadSpace encourages you to take ten minutes each day just to sit, focus on your breathing, allow thoughts to come and go, and really increase your focus on the present moment. It sounds a bit out there, and it certainly won’t work for everyone, but I know that for me, and a few of my friends, it really does! I think a lot of our stresses in life come from concentrating on the future (what if this happens, what if this never happens, what if things don’t work out the way I expected…), which we can’t control, so learning to focus more on the present is important!

Watch an episode of your favourite television show:

As a self-confessed television addict, this is one that works an absolute treat for me every single time. Spending time with your favourite characters can be a brilliant distraction, and especially if it’s a show you’ve seen before and know well, you don’t have to concentrate too much on what’s going on. You can just get caught up in the storyline and get a bit lost in another world – one where whatever it is that has stressed you out doesn’t exist! Then, by the time the episode has finished, you’ve calmed down, and are feeling refreshed and ready to get back to it. Obviously this is a short term solution, but one that I totally recommend.

Sleep it off:

Sometimes, when things have got on top of you, there’s nothing else for it but to head to bed and sleep it off. When you have a lot of work to do, it can be tempting to try to just power through, no matter how you’re feeling, but that usually just results in feeling worse! And, let’s face it, you can’t do your best work when you’re feeling overwhelmed! So sometimes the best thing to do is to head to bed, watch a couple of episodes of something on Netflix, or read a couple of chapters of a good book, and go to sleep. Tomorrow is another day, and you might just find that a good night’s sleep has you waking up with a much clearer head and a more positive perspective!

So you want to study: Veterinary Science!

Happy Friday all – I’m so excited to bring you the first in my new series today! “So you want to study..?” is a series I mentioned a few weeks ago, where guest bloggers can create a post telling you all about their experience of studying a particular course!

First up, we have the lovely Emma from A Little Freckle.  Emma is studying Veterinary Science, and kindly took the time to give us a little insight into what it’s really like to study to be a vet.

First things first, if you want a job that will make you rich then stop reading here…Veterinary is not for you!!!

It is a common misconception that vets are rolling in the money. Their salaries are often compared to that of Medics and Doctors, which is just not how it is. If you want to be a Vet you have to have the passion to want to do it, otherwise you might be left very tired, stressed and disappointed.

I’m Emma and I’m passionate about Veterinary Science! I have wanted to be a vet ever since I can remember. Initially, it was because I used to watch Animal Hospital on TV and there was a vet on that called Emma, which I loved. As I got older, I looked into it a bit more and despite being told how hard it was, I was never put off. In fact, the more I learnt about it, the more I wanted to do it.

Veterinary offers the chance to work with both people and animals! You can’t really say you want to be a vet because you don’t like working with people, because actually, you work with both sides of the lead and either one can be pretty aggressive at times haha!

You also get to play detective because ‘animals can’t talk can they?!’ – you would not believe the amount of times I have had this said to me! If you like problem solving, then maybe veterinary is something you’d enjoy as this is a skill you will need to use on a daily basis.

Before applying for the course, it is essential to have some work experience – my particular vet school ask for a minimum of ten weeks and it should include things like working in kennels, on a dairy farm, at a stable and in veterinary practices. As a five year course, it’s best to get an idea of what you’re getting into before you sign up! You will also be interviewed about these when applying so make sure you know your stuff!

Having fun at the Vets Halfway Weekend in the Lake District!

The work load can be overwhelming at times but many of the vet schools have very active societies and organise lots of social events – work hard, play hard! It is like a big vetty family and it’s so lovely and supportive! You will have to give up more of your time in the holidays too in order to do compulsory placements, but these are usually really fun!

Getting into vet school is tough as there are only 8 in the country with limited places! It took me two goes and I was heartbroken not to get in the first time, but it’s so important not to give up on your dream – and this was mine!

Study Tips: Backing Up Your Files!

Backing up your files, whether it’s a short essay plan, or your entire dissertation, is one of the most important things you can get into the habit of doing during your time at university.  We’re all so used to our computers doing exactly what we ask of them, but sometimes they decide not to play ball, and that can lead to disaster on hand in day if your saved file has inexplicably disappeared!

A student’s worst nightmare – you’ve finally finished that essay which has been weighing you down for weeks, and you head to the library to print it out, or send it via the uni’s electronic system, ready to have it out of your life for good.  You open the folder you could have sworn you saved it in, and it’s nowhere to be seen.  You have an hour till hand in and the assignment you’ve spent the past two weeks working on has vanished from your hard drive.

I don’t know about you, but the mere thought of that situation has me breaking out in a sweat! I was always particularly paranoid about making sure I had double, usually triple backed up my files as a student, so I thought I’d share with you a few different options you have to keep your assignments safely saved and ready to hand in at the deadline!

Copy on to a USB Stick

This first one is probably the most common way students back up their files.  After saving your essay to whatever file you’re keeping it in on your computer, copying it on to a USB stick is not only a super easy way to take your documents home from the library to work on it from the comfort of your bedroom, but it means you instantly have a second copy of your file which you can upload to a computer and print if you need to!

Dropbox-Back-Up-Your-Files

Ahh Dropbox.  I’m a fan of Dropbox.  Backing up your files on websites like this is brilliant because it doesn’t rely on you remembering to put your USB stick in your bag – there’s nothing more frustrating than getting to the library and realising your USB is sitting on your laptop at home! You can log on to any computer and get access to your files through Dropbox.  From word documents, PDFs and PowerPoint Presentations to photos and videos, you can store anything on here.  All you have to do is type in your log in details and BOOM, instant access to your file!

This system is also ideal for group work, as you can create shared folders (via email address) to upload your files to!

Email it to Yourself

A personal favourite of mine, I got into the habit early on in my university career of emailing my documents to myself as an extra way of backing them up.  Again, this is a useful way of doing it because it doesn’t rely on you bringing a disk or USB stick with you, and is easily accessible from any location, even your phone! It’s such a quick and easy way of ensuring you have an extra copy.

Upload to Google Drive

Most of us have a Google account these days, but even if you currently don’t, it takes just a couple of minutes to set one up! I think the drive is a really handy aspect of the whole Gmail/Google system.  If you go into your Google Drive, which you can access by clicking on the little Apps box at the top of the screen (pictured above!), you can upload as many documents as you like.

Use an External Hard Drive

If you have a particularly huge piece of work to back up, it might be an idea to invest in a larger external hard drive.  Not only does this mean you have extra storage for life, but it means that if you run out of space on your USB stick, you have somewhere to save your work! This might be a pricier way of going about it, but it’s always something to consider!

Print a Copy in Advance

And finally we have the old fashioned way! Try to be environmentally friendly, and don’t print a new copy of your essay or report every time you make a change to it, but once you’re fairly sure it doesn’t require further editing, you can always print out one copy, just in case! This was something I tried not to do too often (thinking of the trees!), but if your internet is particularly temperamental, or you’ve had a bad experience with a USB stick in the past, this might make you feel a bit more secure!

So there you have it – six ways to back up your documents to ensure no essays go missing before the deadline!

Guest Bloggers Needed: “So you want to study…?”

Happy Friday everyone – hope you’re all well.  Can we really be a week into March already??!
Today I wanted to talk to you about a series I’ve been planning for this blog.  As much as I had an incredible time at university, and picked up lots of tips and tricks along the way, when it comes to advice on college/university course content my experience is more limited – one person can only study so many subjects!  During my undergrad, I studied Film and Television Studies, Theatre Studies and Comparative Literature, and then went on to do my Masters in International Marketing . So while I can give advice on student life in general, I’m going to need some assistance when it comes to discussing particular courses – and that’s where you come in!!

I’ve decided to call the series “So you want to study…?”, with the relevant course name added to the title of each post. If you study English Lit, then, your post title will be “So you want to study English Literature?” (pretty self-explanatory!). Whether you’re studying at the moment or have already graduated, I want to hear from you! I’m looking for guest posts on as many different courses as possible – so whether you’re studying Medicine, Mechanical Engineering, Makeup or Marketing, drop me an email or leave a comment on this post!
These posts will deal with expectations vs reality, work load, pros and cons, the application process, and what made you want to study the subject you chose! It’ll be a great way to cover a wide variety of subjects, and will hopefully provide some really useful content for anyone contemplating applying for university or college, or even someone who is thinking about changing their course! 5 Reasons To Start A Blog | Student Life

Hello everyone, and happy Friday! Can you believe it’s the end of another week already?!
For my first proper post on this blog, I thought I’d talk about blogging itself! Blogging and YouTube came into my life while I was a student – even though I adored my course, I loved being able to escape from essays and textbooks into the world of beauty and lifestyle blogging. I started watching Fleur de Force, and Louise from Sprinkle of Glitter, and soon made the decision to start my own blog and channel.  I never looked back.
Juggling a blog while you are a student can be tricky time-wise, but it’s so worth it – as well as being a fun hobby, it can be an unbelievably positive addition to your CV! So if you already run a blog and are feeling a little overwhelmed, or are thinking of starting one now, here are 5 benefits of having a blog and/or a YouTube channel.

1. It Shows Commitment

Running a blog or channel requires real commitment.  Friends outside of the blogging bubble might think you sit down for half an hour every now and then, type a few paragraphs and hit publish, but an incredible amount of work goes into maintaining a blog or making videos. From taking photos when the lighting is just right, to finding time to film, edit and upload a video, making a real go of a blog requires effort.  In my experience, employers have been really impressed to see that level of commitment to something.

2. It Helps Showcase Your Talents

Whether you write about beauty, baking or books, blogging is a really great way to show off your talents.  Whatever area your skills lie in, creating a blog means you have a dedicated space to share your knowledge, and, if you post regularly enough, become a bit of an internet expert in your field. What’s more, having the confidence in your abilities to put yourself out there on a blog or YouTube channel gives you a ready made portfolio of work to show to potential employers.

3. It Forces You To Learn New Skills

From photo or video editing, to basic HTML, blogging is a brilliant way to learn some new skills to add to your CV.  I can now confidently list video editing on my CV, something I could never have imagined just a couple of years ago! Not only does blogging up your social media game, from making sure you are getting your links out there across social platforms to using scheduling tools like Hootsuite, but it can help you discover a talent you never knew you had! You might discover you are a genius with Photoshop, which could open up a whole new career path for you!

4. It Builds A Network of Contacts

From the fellow bloggers you chat to every Sunday night during the #lbloggers of #bbloggers Twitter chats, to the PR manager you have been emailing back and forth about a collaborative post, blogging is an amazing networking opportunity.  Without even thinking about, you can find yourself with a whole address book’s-worth of contacts, which can be an extremely useful thing when looking for a new job!

5. It’s A Space Just For You

Although it’s more public, much like journaling, blogging or talking to a camera can be really therapeutic. When you’re studying (or working!), sometimes you need somewhere to escape to, and the blogging community can provide just that! If you need a break from thinking about your next assignment or exam, popping on to Twitter for a chat with some fellow bloggers, or writing your next post can be a lovely way to relax and clear your head.  It boosts your creativity, creates opportunities to develop friendships and can be an amazing way of building your confidence.
